Furniture Friday – History of Furniture
I never thought I would say this, but I wish I paid more attention in my furniture history class. I only recall bits and pieces which took place almost 15 years ago (yikes!). So I decided to pick up this cool book called Vintage Furniture: Collecting & Living With Modern Design Classics . It highlights everything from early modernism to mid-century and beyond. LOVE.
What is the history of furniture design?
Furniture design has been part of the human experience since the beginning of history, with evidence surviving from the Neolithic Period in paintings, wall murals at Pompeii, sculpture, Egyptian pyramids and tombs in Ghiordes. The timeline includes Neolithic, Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek, Medieval, Renaissance, Jacobean, Colonial, Rococo Revival, Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, Art Deco and Modern periods. Excavations at Skara Brae uncovered stone furniture from 3100-2500 BC, while Egyptian examples include 3rd millennium BC beds and a 2550 BC gilded bed and chairs from Queen Hetepheres’ tomb.

How did furniture evolve from ancient times to the modern era?
Furniture design has undergone a significant transformation over the centuries, evolving from purely functional objects to artistic expressions that reflect societal values, technological advancements, and environmental concerns. The transition from handcrafted, ornate pieces to industrially produced items marked a critical shift in the 19th century.
In contemporary society, the modern emphasis on minimalism, ergonomics, and multifunctionality reflects changing living patterns, urbanization, and an increased focus on well-being. Technological innovations, such as digital fabrication and smart materials, have further expanded design possibilities, while sustainable practices lead to eco-friendly materials and circular design principles.

What were the main materials used in furniture throughout history?
Furniture has been made from wood, metal, plastics, and fabrics. In prehistoric times, materials were limited, with stone, wood, and animal hides being the primary sources for crafting furniture. Wood is the most popular material for making furniture due to its durability, aesthetic appeal, and ease of processing, with types such as teak, redwood, and mahogany. Metal is strong and durable, often used for outdoor furniture. MDF, an engineered wood product, is also used.
