My cousin Tracey wanted to do a winter photoshoot a couple of weekends ago. We weren’t blessed with any snow, but boy was it ever cold! Needless to say, I had to move as quickly as possible since frostbite was starting to kick in.

The best time of day for a family photoshoot is golden hour, the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. During this time, the sun is low along the horizon and produces warm, soft light that flatters skin tones and eliminates harsh shadows. Mid-day light is harsh and creates unflattering shadows under the nose, chin, and eyes. Because sunset times vary throughout the year, golden hour fluctuates, with summer sessions beginning around 7:30 or 8:00 and fall sessions around 4:30.
