While looking through my catalogue of photos I remembered one of the hottest and most humid days I’ve ever experienced. Surprisingly, it was during our trip to the windy city. I’ve felt the caribbean sun on me before, but the heatwave in Chicago was so brutal to walk around in. And you can’t necessarily wander the streets in a bikini sipping cocktails! So as I sat at my desk reminiscing, dressed in a sweater and track pants, I happily browsed through sweaty pictures of my boyfriend and I, along with hundreds (yes hundreds) of architectural photos. All that walking in extreme heat was definitely worth it. There was so much beauty to see and appreciate. My fave building: The Carbide and Carbon Building which was built in 1929 – classic Art Deco design. Who are the most influential architects in Chicago’s history?

Daniel Burnham is arguably one of the most influential people on Chicago’s urban landscape, with work including the Plan of Chicago and the World’s Columbian Exposition. Louis Sullivan is known as the “father of skyscrapers.” Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is considered a pioneer of Modernist architecture and led the Illinois Institute of Technology’s architecture school.

Jeanne Gang founded Studio Gang, and her Aqua tower is the tallest woman-designed building in the world. Danielle Tillman, managing director at bKL Architecture, merges design with social and community needs.

What is the Chicago School of architecture?

The Chicago School, or Commercial Style, was one of the most notable styles of architecture to emerge from Chicago and Illinois. It was developed with structures built from around 1880, after the Great Fire, until the first World War. The style was influenced by traditional French and English designs from the early 1800s, but Chicago architects added innovations such as iron framing rather than masonry walls, a trademark that gave buildings a distinctive appearance and made them more likely to withstand a fire.

How did the Great Chicago Fire influence architecture in the city?

The Great Chicago Fire led to laws requiring new buildings to use fireproof materials such as brick, stone, marble, and limestone, and wood was banned in the downtown area. Because these materials were heavier, steel skeletons with deep foundations were explored to build higher without the weight of masonry, which is commonly considered a catalyst for the skyscrapers that define Chicago’s skyline. The rebuilding effort also produced a new style of architecture and signature industrial style using local materials.
